Gary Halberstadt
Oil and Acrylic Artist
Mr. Halberstadt taught himself to paint in oils during his service in the Army, and he painted sporadically into the 1970's. An accident in 2005 curtailed his active life, providing opportunity for his artistic resurgence. He has participated in workshops with Margaret Hoyback and John Poon. He is a recipient of a 2006 Mary Whyte Merit Award.
He captures instances of beauty and interest with energetic use of his camera, which translates onto canvas an aesthetic expression depicting inherent tapestry, color and harmony. Mr. Halberstadt enjoys "flowing" with his brushes as each scene unfolds communicating a work of impressionism influenced by doses of realism and strokes of expressionism. However, he does not feel obliged to specialize in a particular subject matter or artistic genre. The subjects of his works are as varied as his interests. His palette is influenced by the aesthetic expression of each work, reflecting memories of the subject and his passion, emotions and moods during the work.
Mr. Halberstadt was born in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated the University of Buffalo with a Liberal Arts B.A. Degree as a Philosophy Major. He served in the U.S. Army during the Berlin Crisis and later a Law Review graduate of Brooklyn Law School. He is co-founder of the Alliance of Brunswick Country Property Owner's Associations of North Carolina (ABCPOA), a former Executive Committee member of the Brunswick County Coastal Events Center and is president of the Brunswick Arts Council, NC.
